Graduate Student Scholarships
The Communication Disorders Foundation of Virginia (CDF) is pleased to offer the CDF Scholarship ($2,500) and the David H. Narburgh ScholarshipScholarship ($1,000) for the 2009-2010 academic year.
These scholarships are designed to recognize students who have demonstrated ou
tstanding clinical potential. These awards will be granted to current or rising master's degree students in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology enrolled in one of the following universities in Virginia: Hampton University, James Madison University, Longwood University, Old Dominion University, Radford University, or the University of Virginia.
For application requirements and additional information, please contact the program director at your school or Mani Aguilar, CDF Scholarship Committee, at 434.924.4613. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2009.

Henry C. Hecker High School Scholarship
Each spring the Communication Disorders Foundation of Virginia awards the Henry C. Hecker High School Scholarship to a high school senior who is hearing impaired, who has a B average, and who is pursuing education beyond high school (vocational, college, etc.). This award is $1,000.
Qualified students may apply for this award by requesting an application from Janet Stack at jws8n@virginia.edu or downloading the required forms as a Microsoft Word document. Completed applications are due by May 1, 2009. Click here for the High School Scholarship Application.

CDF Scholarship
Heather Donald
University of Virginia
Heather Donald of Holmdel, New Jersey was awarded
the $2,500 CDF Scholarship. Heather received her B.S in Communication Sciences and Disorders from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in May 2007. She was the recipient of the 2005 Francis Hoffman Award for Excellence in Professional Writing. She has been actively involved in the UVa chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association as the 2008 Treasurer. She is continuing her education in the graduate program at the University of Virginia, where she is pursuing her M.Ed. in Communication Disorders with an expected graduation date of May 2009.

Olympics and fundraising for a scholarship to SPLASH, a summer speech
program at UVa. Currently, Catherine is interning at the Naval Medical
Center San Diego, where she has been working primarily with TBI
patients. She will be completing her final internship at Rady
Children's Hospital also in San Diego. Following graduation, Catherine
plans to pursue employment in a pediatric medical setting. She has an
interest in infant/adolescent feeding and swallowing as well as

Kyle Cooper
Midlothian High School
This year we awarded two Henry C. Hecker High School Scholarships. The first went to Kyle Cooper, who graduated from Midlothian High School in Midlothian, who received a $1,000 scholarship. In his junior year Kyle won the Randolph-Maco
n College Book Award for his qualities of character, leadership, and academic excellence. He is a competitive swimmer among many other extracurricular activities and honors. Kyle was involved with the Student Sidekick Program, the Latin Club, the Art Guild, and the National Honor Society. While in school he worked for Smoketree Association as a lifeguard. He was on the Smoketree swim team for 10 years and was a year-round senior level swimmer. He also worked as a volunteer at the Science Museum of Virginia, and volunteered as a mentor for a hearing impaired child. Kyle entered the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech where he plans to pursue studies in landscape architecture.
Andrew Johns
James Monroe High School
A $500 scholarship was awarded to Andrew Johns who graduated from James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg where he had a very distinguished record, excelling in academics, sports, music, and leadership
. Andy served as a member of the James Monroe High School Key club and is a Monroe Scholar, the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. He was a student representative for Boys State, president of the French Club, and member of the Golf, Forensic and Tennis teams. He was also on the James Monroe yearbook staff serving as a videographer. One of his hobbies is playing the alto and soprano saxophone. He is now at the University of Virginia where he plans to study mechanical or chemical engineering. He has aspirations of someday becoming an astronaut.
